The phytostation that is being implemented relies on reactions occurring in natural environments and allows for the abatement of pathogens, suspended solids (SS), as well as organic matter such as chemical oxygen demand (COD). and the biological oxygen demand for 5 days (BOD5).

This purification is made possible thanks to the combined action of three main natural and complementary processes:
a physico-chemical retention of the pollutants by the substrate, reinforced by the root system of the plants,
a biodegradation of the pollutants thanks to the microbial activity, this activity itself stimulated by the presence of the plants,
- phyto-assimilation of pollutants by plants and storage in their biomass.
Moreover, the interactions between the substrate, the microorganisms and the plants (mesophytes), such as retention, bio-stimulation, phyto-stabilization, phyto-volatilization and phyto-extraction, have significant impacts on the treatment performance. In addition, root exudates of some plant species promote the elimination of pathogens.
In order to set up optimal treatment conditions, Phytostation is composed of:
- Settling and filtration basin;
- planted filter basin with vertical flow;
- planted filter basin with horizontal flow;
- Lagooning pond
